Bob Dylan's Birthday BASH at WSLR
Now that Bob Dylan has won the Nobel Prize for Literature (2016) – the first musician to win the award –WSLR decided it was time to pay tribute to the enigmatic songwriter. Multiple bands will pay tribute including Ship of Fools, Steve Arvey with Rebecca Byrd and Roy Handcuff (WSLR’s very own Mark Zampella, Kid Red, Paul Louis and Scott Blum).
It all happens on Sunday, May 21st at 6pm on the patio at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Advance tickets are available at www.wslr.org.
Since Bob Dylan's 1962 debut, his music has transcended genre and generations. The list of musicians who have covered his music reads like a history of rock music itself: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Lou Reed, Pearl Jam and more.
At this event local bands will get to put their own spin on Dylan’s tunes. Ship of Fools was created as a tribute band to the musical talents of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead, but they love Dylan too. Roy Handcuff is a collection of Sarasota musicians who create winsome harmonies and melodies set to updated traditional arrangements and themes. Featuring Mark Zampella (gtr/vcls), Kid Red (gtr/vcls/steel), Fiona Stewart (violin), Paul Louis (bass/vcls) and Scott Blum (drums), this aggregate roams the free plains of alt-country, cosmic cowboy, and spooky dirt rock. Best known in the blues and jazz genre, Steve Arvey is one of the area’s most respected musicians. He’ll bring his high energy personality and special guest Rebecca Byrd to the tribute show.
