2017 World Rowing Championships – The British are Here!

2017 World Rowing Championships – The British are Here!

It rained a bit on the opening day of the Championships and I ducked into one of the tents to escape it. I struck up a conversation with a lovely lady from Great Britain who told me her son was in the competition. Her name is Joanna Jeffery and I found out she owns a company called trugs (teach reading using games). When she realized her son would be in this competition she went online and looked for any conventions that were in the area where she could set up a booth and meet with teachers about her specialty, which is dyslexia. There was one in Daytona so they went and met with teachers there and then she and her husband came over to Sarasota to watch their son row.

Great Britain at the 2017 World Rowing ChampionshipsTheir son, Tom, started rowing three years ago…when he was 27! Now he’s competing with the best in the world at 30 years old! Of course, when he said he wanted to compete at this age, everyone told him it couldn’t be done. He wanted it very badly and has worked hard to get here and has proved them all wrong.

His mother (who is his BIGGEST fan!) told me he has been an athlete most of his life and loves to learn. He’s very good at listening to his coaches and working to perfect his stroke. Tom rows in the Men’s Pair and today he and his partner came in second! His mother and dad are behind him all the way!

World Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson ParkJoanna Jeffery loves to teach people of all ages and abilities to read. Her business is all about making learning a fun event for the teacher and the learner. The Queen of England bestowed Honour on her for her work! She will be here all week with the Championships and is happy to meet with teachers to talk about trug. Check out her website at www.readsuccessfully.com .

There’s a lot of the Championships left to watch. Please visit www.wrch2017.com to purchase tickets and get lots of information about this great event.
